La fibre de polyvinyle formel obtenue par traitement de cette fibre avec du formald\u00e9hyde est appel\u00e9e vinylon en Chine et vinylon dans le monde. Les fibres obtenues par filage d'alcool polyvinylique de poids mol\u00e9culaire relativement faible comme mati\u00e8re premi\u00e8re sont solubles dans l'eau et sont appel\u00e9es fibres d'alcool polyvinylique solubles dans l'eau. Les fibres d'alcool polyvinylique g\u00e9n\u00e9rales n'ont pas la r\u00e9sistance n\u00e9cessaire \u00e0 l'eau chaude et ont peu de valeur d'application pratique.
