Selulosa alkali adalah makromolekul alami. Setiap cincin berbasis serat mengandung tiga gugus hidroksil. Gugus hidroksil yang paling aktif bereaksi membentuk hidroksietil selulosa. Rendam serat kapas mentah atau bubur kertas halus dalam soda api cair 30%, keluarkan dan tekan setelah setengah jam. Peras hingga rasio air alkali mencapai 1:2,8, lalu hancurkan. Selulosa alkali yang dihancurkan dimasukkan ke dalam ketel reaksi, disegel, disedot, diisi dengan nitrogen, dan udara di dalam ketel sepenuhnya diganti dengan penyedotan berulang dan pengisian nitrogen.
